Most people realize the importance of light and water when it comes to growing orchids. Few of them consider the importance of the orchid pot that is used for holding the plant. The orchid pot is almost just as important as the amount of light and water to make sure the plant grows successfully. The pot that is used needs to be deep enough for the roots to have room to grow. It also needs to have the right kind of drainage because orchids do not grow well when standing in water. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing the right orchid pot.
Although orchids can be grown in almost any kind of pot the two main kinds of pot that are used are plastic and clay. Each kind of orchid pot has its advantages. Clay pots usually are better looking. However, they absorb salts and minerals that, over time, will harm the roots of the orchid. Plastic pots have the ability to retain water. This kind is better if you have a habit of over watering your orchid plants. The pot that is used will need to drain quickly.
The orchid should be repotted when the plants starts to grow out of the pot. The best time to repot the orchid is after the plant blooms in the spring. If the roots still fit it is safe to put the orchids back into the same pot. Otherwise you should move the plant to a larger size orchid pot. When you are repotting the orchid, take the plant out of its pot and wash the bark off the roots. Use slightly warm water to make the roots more elastic and easier to work with. If there are any black, brown, or mush roots snip them away. Once this is complete you put the plant back into the pot and add bark.
