People who love flowers and orchids in particular might consider becoming a judge for an orchid show. There is an orchid show in many places in the United States and some in Canada. The orchid show consists of a contest where gardeners enter their best orchids into a competition. The judges of the orchid show determine the winner.

Becoming an orchid show judge requires a commitment. The first step to becoming a judge is to apply to the American Orchid Society, AOS. If your application is accepted, you will begin training as an apprentice or student judge. This training can last three to five years. Make sure that you would like to make this time commitment before applying for the position.

Once the student training part of the process has been successfully completed, you will become a certified judge. You will have the authority to judge at any AOS-sanctioned orchid show. At this point, the judge status is probationary. You will continue to train for another three to five years. After this time period you will be able to attain accreditation. Even after accreditation you should continue to learn about new developments through seminars and workshops.

The AOS Handbook on Judging and Exhibition is an excellent resource for any person who is considering or has already become an AOS judge. This book contains complete information on the American Orchid Society’s judging system. The handbook is also helpful for those who will have AOS judges at their show.

AOS judges are governed by a judging committee which consists of a Chair and three appointed members. The Committee also contains the chair of each judging center. The Judging Committee is responsible for establishing standards for accepting and training new judges and revising the Handbook. The Committee is also responsible for making recommendations on updating the training process.
