Okay, so maybe your garden won't shine the light as an assortment of light bulbs would - but who can deny the radiance emitted from a garden of perennial bulbs! Perennial bulbs display a thick base of leaves and store their food in underground organs as vertical shoots. The thick base of leaves don't support the plant, but instead, store food and enable these types of plants to survive adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or cold temperatures. In the center of these leaves are a nice arrangement of flowers. Good examples are onions and garlic, but others - such as tulips and lilies offer a colorful palette to a garden.
There are about a hundred different species of tulips, and they are known for their showy six-petal bloom. To grow tulips, you'll need either an offset or seed - although interestingly, these color, size, and petal shape of these flowers differ from their parents each time their cultivated! It's because of these differences, that there are so many variations of this flower. Romance author Alexandre Dumas (1850) initiated the challenge to grow a black tulip - playing its part in the current obsession with tulips and other perennial bulbs. To grow tulips, you'll also need to be patient... Tulip seeds may take anywhere from five years on up to seven years to grow, while a tulip offset will grow after a year. Their proper environment (a cold winter season) demands September planting to last through the winter.
Hyacinth flowers are herb perennial bulbs named after the hyacinth - a red transparent form of crystal regarded as a gemstone. In the eighteenth century, these perennial bulbs were the main commercial product of the Netherlands. It's characteristic of yellow, red, white, or blue flowers.
Narcissi perennial bulbs flower in spring and include the popular daffodil.
Scilla perennial bulbs are herbs that belong to the hyacinth family, and they flower in early spring along seashores, in wooded areas, and in meadows. Their blooms are usually purple, blue, pink and white.
As with all plants of this type, gardens containing perennial bulbs should be cleaned by removing dead foliage and stems, thinned (divided) in the case of overgrowth, mulched with rotting vegetable matter, weeded by hand or by chemicals, and fertilized right before they grow new shoots. All of these tasks should be performed on a regular basis. In preparation for their growth, you should first - select perennial bulbs that will survive in your environment, second - design the perimeters of your garden, third - turn your soil, fourth - add fertilizer, fifth - drop in your seeds or plant your offsets, and lastly - water your garden every day so that it has a nice moist consistency.
