Not all plants grow and stay health in lowly lit areas. However some plants do just fine, or even better in darker areas of your garden. Knowing which plants serve well in dark environments will help you develop an array of floral beauty in the different areas of your home. This information is particularly helpful for those whose property is heavily shaded or doesn't seem to catch as much sunlight as other property. If you are gardening and shade is an issue, you may find the following plants appropriate for your situation.

The acanthus (also known as the "bear's breech") does well for perennial shade issues and will grow large spiny leaves and spikes or white or purplish flowers.

The anemone is a shade plant known for its beautiful flowers and concentric circles of leaves.

The aquilegia (also known as the columbine) displays showy spurred flowers and performs well in darker areas.

The astilbe (also known as the false spirea) displays compound leaves and a showy cluster (panicle) of tiny colorful flowers.

The bergenia, as a dark environment plant, is valued as an evergreen ground cover and for its spring blossoms.

The campanula is a perennial shade plant that displays blue or white bell-shaped flowers.

The dicentra (also known as the bleeding heart) is a perennial shade herb with divided leaves and irregular flowers.

The euphorbia (also known as the spurge) is known for its milky juice and thrives in that don't receive much light.

The hemerocallis (also known as the daylily) is a perennial shade herb that displays flowers on long leafless stalks.

The heuchera (also known as the coral bells) displays leaves and small panicled flowers in dark areas.

The hosta (also known as the plantain lily) is a perennial shade plant that displays stalked flowers.
