So now that you're interested in growing flowers that will reappear for the lifetime of your garden, what will you choose? There are just so many of them. How do others know just the right kind to plant and build a beautiful garden?

There's no denying that perennial flowers are some of the most beautiful of all. Some bloom a single large spike or flower cluster. Others bloom heaps of petals at a time. Which are right for you? This article will introduce seven of some of the more popular ones.

The bleeding heart is known for its red and white heart shaped flowers that hang over from two feet tall stems. It's a species of the Dicentra family, and is found mainly in mountainous areas of California.

The ever-popular chrysanthemums, which means "golden flowers" in Latin, range in color from pale yellow to bright red (crimson), however these perennial flowers can also grow in colors of chestnut, pink or white. Some chrysanthemums are as small as tiny pompons while others are large and immense. Coarse to the touch and strongly scented, these perennial flowers were brought to Europe from China and Japan during the forth century (AD) and have long been a symbol of the Japanese imperial house.

The columbine belongs to the buttercup family and because of their red and yellow color, they're often incorrectly labeled honeysuckle. Columbine perennial flowers can be other colors (like white, red, yellow, blue, or lavender) however, yet their rich nectar and pollen attract butterflies, moths, bees, and hummingbirds the same way that honeysuckle perennial flowers do. The columbine is known for its nodding flowers and it blooms between early summer or late spring. Like the plants of this class, the leaves of columbine turn colors in autumn, too.

The day lily shows a loose group of lily-like flowers on tall stems. Interestingly, these flowers last only one day!

The foxglove is a member of the figwort family and displays large oval leaves.

The hibiscus is a purple-blue, white, magenta, crimson, cream, pink, or yellow flower that is known not only for it's rich and deep colored base, but also for it's ability to change color in the noon hours! These perennial flowers are the largest group of the mallow family and it's name means "marshmallow" in Latin. Varied species of it can be used for okra, gumbo, cranberry-like jelly, and others are valued for the scents of their seeds, used for perfume or to flavor coffee.

Peony perennial flowers have a history with ancient Roman gardeners, and survive in almost any soil. Showing a mass of lilac, white or yellow, or red blooms, these flowers are accompanied by dark green foliage. The ethnic name for the Chinese version of Peony is "Paeonia lactiflora."
