How To Make Your Own Solar Oven

Whether you're out in the mountains camping or stranded in an island much like Tom Hanks' character in Castaway or a contestant of the reality TV series Survivor, you'd need some survival skills to make it through such ordeals. And since you will be expected to work without the help of modern technology anyhow, which is quite difficult, might as well reward yourself with results that you can enjoy. Take for example the necessity of cooking your meals. Just because you don't have access to an oven doesn't mean you cannot enjoy oven-specific delicacies. You can always cook your meals with a solar oven.

"A solar oven?!" you might scream. Yes, a solar oven - one that harnesses the sun's rays to simulate the heat of a real oven so that you can cook the delicacies that will otherwise require your presence in the kitchen.

Creating your own solar oven is not difficult at all, even when you're left with little to no devices. Let's take a look at the materials you will need:

* 2 boxes, one smaller than the other
* a cardboard that is bigger than the opening of the biggest box
* newspapers or dried leaves
* aluminum foil

Once you have procured these materials, it's time to get to work.

On the bigger box, place some crumpled newspaper on its inner surface.

Place the smaller box inside the bigger one. Both boxes should be opened from the top. The smaller box should slightly be elevated, since it will be sitting on the crumpled newspapers below.

Fill up the space in between the sides of the smaller box and the bigger box with crumpled newspaper.

Then place the cardboard on the opening of the bigger box. Measure the opening and make the corresponding markings on the cardboard.

On the markings, paste the aluminum foil.

Once the aluminum foil is safely glued to the cardboard, cut a cross that will extend to all four corner. Press the new sides downwards.

Now place the cardboard on top of the bigger box with all the four new sides that have been glued with aluminum foil pointing inwards, in such a way that when it is placed under direct sunlight, the sides will reflect the rays of the sun to the opening of the smaller box.

Then you're done. You have your own solar-powered oven, and you can start cooking. All that remains is the correct placement of your makeshift oven under direct sunlight.
